Teaching

Twenty-one courses, four universities, eleven years

From Elizabethan poetry to technical writing for engineers — and, increasingly, the design of curriculum for students who study at a distance.

How I teach

Discussion before conclusion

A literature classroom works when students argue with the text and with each other. My job is to keep that argument rigorous — to insist on evidence from the page — rather than to deliver a reading for them to copy down.

Method is teachable

Research skill is not innate. Bibliographies, archives, digital tools, the shape of a good research question: these can be taught explicitly, and students who are taught them explicitly produce markedly better work.

Literature is not sealed off

The same critical attention that reads a Victorian poem reads a film, an advertisement, or a YouTube performance. Students who see that connection stop treating the syllabus as a museum.

Mentorship outlasts the semester

Much of the work that matters happens outside teaching hours — on dissertations, applications, and career decisions. That has always been part of the role, not an addition to it.

Courses taught

Postgraduate literature, undergraduate honours, and professional communication for STEM, management, nursing, and hospitality programmes.

Empowering people before empowering technology

Self-learning material
